FEATURED SPEAKERSCommander Kris Kroncke , District 3, Denver Police Department talked about the recent rise in burglaries. There has been a rise in female burglars and some are using socks for gloves. 40 % of the burglaries are crimes of opportunity without forced entry .He emphasized the need to watch out for your neighbors. Officer Tony Burkardt is available to do home security surveys. Call the district office when you are going out of town and ask for additional coverage by the area officers. Although there have been budget cuts in the police department, District 3 is fully staffed, but there are no extra personnel.
Tom Boasberg, Superintendent of Denver Public Schools gave us an overview of the schools. Enrollment is up and there is active recruitment of students from private schools. Preschool has been established for low income and English language learners. Over 2000 students are attending all day kindergarten. However there is still a need to accelerate reforms. Less than 50% of the students are proficient in English and fewer than 50 % graduate from high school. An achievement gap in minority scores still continue to be addressed. The DPS strategic vision includes: an emphasis of resources on the classroom and local control of expenditures; a focus on teachers as the most critical to proficiency; a culture of high expectations regardless of background. 10% of the schools are charters and state mandate has opened then up to all students.
The New BID marketing director, Mike Blake and his associate Kristy Omdahl presented the new holiday marketing program for the season.
